Nigeria Volleyball Premiership Begins Saturday with Record ₦24 Million Subsidy Pool

 The CGC Nigeria Volleyball Premiership 2025 officially serves off on Saturday, September 20, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The high-stakes tournament will run until October 2, showcasing the best of Nigerian volleyball in a two-week contest for national supremacy, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

At the official pre-tournament press conference held Friday, key stakeholders from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) outlined plans for what is expected to be the most competitive and financially rewarding edition yet.

"This Year Will Be Unique and Exciting" – Nzogwu.

Speaking at the media briefing, Nkechi Nzogwu, Chairman of the League Management Committee and Second Vice President of the NVBF, said expectations are high for this year’s edition. “This year’s Premier League is going to be unique and very exciting. We sincerely appreciate the Comptroller-General of Customs for sustaining his sponsorship. He supported us last year and has repeated it again to put smiles on the faces of our players,” Nzogwu said.

She also praised NVBF President, Engineer Musa Nimrod, for his visionary leadership and efforts in elevating Nigerian volleyball, particularly in beach volleyball where Nigerian teams have earned international recognition.

Customs Service Deepens Financial Support

Representing the tournament’s headline sponsor, Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi (MFR), the Director of Sports at NCS, Samuel Onikeku, reiterated the Service’s long-term commitment to sports development.

He announced an increase in financial packages for both players and teams:

Team subsidies have been increased from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000

Player subsidies have been raised to ₦500,000

A total of ₦24 million has been earmarked for the first phase, with the same amount planned for the final phase.

“The Comptroller-General’s vision is to promote not just volleyball, but Nigerian sports in general. His support goes beyond financial contributions; it’s about creating opportunities and motivating players. Last year, under his leadership, Nigeria successfully hosted the African Clubs Championship for the first time,” Onikeku said.

Rising Status in African Volleyball

With the growing prestige of the CGC Nigeria Volleyball Premiership, the tournament has become a key fixture on the African volleyball calendar. Last year’s edition drew regional interest, and the increased investment in 2025 is expected to boost the standard of competition even further.

Last season, the champions walked away with ₦5 million, while the runners-up and third-place finishers earned ₦3 million and ₦2 million respectively. Teams ranked from 4th to 12th received ₦500,000 each— a structure that will continue with enhanced bonuses.

Volleyball Fever Takes Over Abuja

The capital city will be home to Nigeria’s volleyball elite for the duration of the tournament. Defending champions will look to retain their crown while fresh contenders seek to make their mark. With financial incentives and national pride on the line, fans can expect two weeks of thrilling, high-energy volleyball action.

Dignitaries in attendance at the press briefing included Professor Ebenezer Morakinyo (NVBF Board Member), Martin Melandi (Technical Director), Prince Tunde Omisore (Board Member), and Wosilat Abbas (Secretary General).
