Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Revived As FG Examines DR Congo Eligibility Case

The Federal Government of Nigeria has sought clarification from the National Sports Commission (NSC) over the possibility of the Democratic Republic of Congo being disqualified from the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff, following allegations of fielding ineligible players against Nigeria, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The inquiry follows a formal petition submitted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to FIFA, challenging DR Congo’s use of at least six players during the CAF World Cup playoff final.

DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at the end of regulation and extra time, securing qualification for the inter-confederation playoffs scheduled to take place in Mexico in March 2026.

The NFF has confirmed that it lodged a complaint with world football’s governing body, alleging that FIFA was misled into clearing the players involved. Speaking to BSN Sports on Tuesday, NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi claimed that the Congolese federation knowingly presented players who had not fully met the legal requirements to become citizens of the country.

According to Sanusi, while the players were cleared to feature, their documentation did not satisfy all mandatory obligations under Congolese nationality laws, raising questions about their eligibility to represent the national team.

Following reports of the petition, the Federal Government contacted the NSC to verify the claims and assess the likelihood of sanctions, including a possible disqualification of DR Congo. Such an outcome could potentially reopen Nigeria’s path to the 2026 World Cup playoffs, pending FIFA’s final decision.

As both countries shift focus to the 2025 African Nations Cup, no official ruling has been issued by FIFA, as the case remains under review.
