Lagos State is set to make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Championship, a cutting-edge electric powerboat racing series, scheduled to take place on October 4–5, 2025, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle following his visit to Monaco, where he witnessed the global event firsthand.

“This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking,” Sanwo-Olu shared.

“I’m proud to announce that Lagos will become the first African city to host the E1 Championship on October 4th and 5th, 2025. That’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city. It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for its partnership and support, particularly in backing Team Drogba—one of the teams competing in the championship, co-owned by Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba.

“Their investment in Team Drogba and commitment to this vision mean a great deal. We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores, we’re opening a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer,” the governor concluded.

The E1 Championship is the world’s first all-electric raceboat series, designed to promote sustainable innovation in marine transport while delivering thrilling on-water competition in global cities.
