Nigerian Athletes Emerge As Title Contenders at NCAA Outdoor Championships

Nigeria will have a strong representation at the 2026 NCAA Division I Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with five athletes emerging as genuine title contenders among the 34 Nigerians set to compete, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ahead of the prestigious competition, four of the five athletes have earned places on the prestigious Bowerman Watch List, highlighting their outstanding performances throughout the season and their potential to challenge for national honours.

The quintet have all established themselves among the elite in collegiate athletics, with each athlete currently ranked within the top two nationally in their respective events heading into Eugene. 

Furthermore, four of them are listed among the top 10 all-time performers in NCAA history.

Leading Nigeria's charge is Kanyinsola Ajayi, who will compete in the men's 100 metres after an impressive campaign that has positioned him among the favourites for the sprint title.

In the men's 400 metres, Samuel Ogazi enters the championships as the only defending champion among the Nigerian contingent and will be aiming to retain his crown following another remarkable season.

Field events will also see strong Nigerian representation through Chinecherem Nnamdi in the javelin throw and Temitope Adeshina in the women's high jump, both of whom have consistently delivered top-class performances this year.

Rounding out the list of title hopefuls is Israel Okon Sunday, who heads into the men's 200 metres competition as one of the leading contenders for gold.

The NCAA Division I Track and Field Outdoor Championships are scheduled to commence on Wednesday in Eugene, with Nigeria's contingent expected to make a significant impact on one of collegiate athletics' biggest stages.
