Nigerian-born Bafana Bafana defender Ime Okon has come under heavy criticism from a section of fans who question his South African identity, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Okon, who recently earned a call-up to the senior national team, has been targeted on social media by some supporters who argue that he is not a “pure” South African due to his Nigerian heritage.

The defender returns to the national setup after previously making five appearances at the COSAFA Cup, where he scored one goal. His latest invitation marks his first full call-up under head coach Hugo Broos.

Okon had earlier missed two national team selections due to injury but has now been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Siyabonga Ngezana of FCSB.

 He is the only change in central defence from the squad that featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite his inclusion, his call-up has sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans expressing reservations linked to his background. 

Okon’s father, who passed away during his formative years, was Nigerian, a factor that has fueled the ongoing debate among supporters.
