Nigerian Clubs Among Beneficiaries Of FIFA’s Enhanced Club Compensation Fund

Former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Enyimba and Remo Stars are set to receive financial rewards following FIFA’s confirmation that clubs releasing players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign will benefit from its expanded Club Benefits Programme, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

FIFA announced on June 9 that the initiative, designed to compensate clubs for making players available for international duty, has been significantly expanded and will, for the first time, include payments for participation in World Cup qualifying matches.

Under the programme, clubs will receive a minimum of $2,360 for every player released for each qualifying match.

According to FIFA, the total fund has been increased to $355 million under a renewed Memorandum of Understanding with the European Club Association (ECA), representing a 70 percent increase from the amount distributed during the 2022 World Cup cycle.

“The FIFA Council has confirmed that the $355 million fund agreed as part of the renewed memorandum of understanding between FIFA and European Football Clubs will be split into two distinct allocations,” the world football governing body said in a statement.

FIFA disclosed that $100 million has been earmarked specifically for clubs that released players during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The amount will be distributed on a per-player, per-match basis across the 905 qualifying matches played globally.

The remaining $250 million will be shared among clubs whose players participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Payments will be calculated on a per-player, per-day basis, taking into account squad selection and the duration of each player's involvement in the tournament.

FIFA stated that clubs could earn a minimum of approximately $5,000 per player per day during the final tournament, while the remaining $5 million reserve fund will be directed toward the development of global club football after administrative costs have been deducted.

Among Nigerian clubs, Remo Stars are expected to be one of the major beneficiaries due to their contribution to several national teams during the qualification campaign, which ran from November 2023 to October 2025.

The Ikenne-based club released Benin Republic goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa for eight qualifying matches, Nigerian goalkeeper Kayode Bankole for two matches, defender Sodiq Ismaila for two matches, and Togolese forward Franck Mawuena for three matches.

The expanded programme underscores FIFA’s continued recognition of the critical role clubs play in the development and release of players for international competitions, while providing additional financial support to teams that contribute to the global game.
