Nigerian Midfielder Secures Third Place in Prestigious Ebony Shoe Award

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has secured a third-place finish in the 2026 edition of the prestigious Ebony Shoe Award, which honours the best African player in the Belgian league, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The award was won by Genk’s Moroccan defender Zakaria El Ouahdi, while Algerian midfielder Adem Zorgane finished in second place after an impressive campaign. Onyedika’s podium finish continues Nigeria’s strong representation in the history of the accolade.

The 24-year-old, who plays for Club Brugge, has been a key figure in his side’s midfield this season, contributing with consistent performances in both domestic and European competitions. Known for his composure on the ball, defensive discipline, and ability to dictate tempo, Onyedika has further strengthened his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most reliable midfielders abroad.

His third-place finish marks him as the 12th Nigerian to reach the top three of the Ebony Shoe Award, a recognition that has previously been claimed by several notable Nigerian players who have excelled in Belgium’s top flight.

Established in 1992, the Ebony Shoe is awarded annually to the best African player or player of African descent in the Belgian Pro League. The recognition is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious individual honours for African footballers playing in Europe, highlighting consistency, performance, and overall impact throughout the season.
