Nigerian Table Tennis Faces Rankings Dip in Latest ITTF Release

Nigeria’s table tennis icon Aruna Quadri has slipped from his long-held position as Africa’s highest-ranked player in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) world rankings released on Tuesday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Quadri dropped one place to 34th globally with 875 ranking points, allowing Egypt’s Omar Assar to reclaim the continental number one position after climbing to 33rd with 976 points.

The change marks another chapter in one of African table tennis’ most enduring rivalries, with Quadri and Assar having dominated the men’s game on the continent for close to a decade.

Quadri, celebrated for his powerful forehand and fearless attacking style, has been a consistent standard-bearer for Nigeria at major international competitions, including multiple ITTF World Cup appearances and Olympic Games. However, a run of mixed results on the world tour in recent months has affected his ranking, opening the door for Assar’s return to the top.

The Egyptian has enjoyed a strong run of form since late 2025, recording a series of impressive results on the European circuit. His resurgence has been attributed to improved fitness levels and a more refined tactical approach, particularly in matches against defensive opponents, helping him accumulate crucial ranking points.

The latest rankings also reflect a difficult period for other Nigerian male players. Rising prospect Matthew Kuti slipped two places from 182nd to 184th following a quiet start to the year. Despite the dip, Kuti—who made a strong impression at the 2024 African Championships—is expected to challenge for higher rankings as he targets qualification for major international events later in the season.

Abdulbasit Abdulfatai also dropped five places from 205th to 210th, while former African Games gold medallist Olajide Omotayo fell from 224th to 229th as he continues his efforts to rediscover his best form.

Youngster Taiwo Mati, regarded as one of Nigeria’s prospects for the future, slipped from 228th to 233rd. Still in his early 20s, Mati has shown promise at international junior events, earning recognition for his speed and agility.

In the women’s rankings, Nigeria’s leading player Fatimo Bello also recorded a slight decline, dropping three places from 115th to 118th. Despite the setback, Bello remains a key figure in the women’s national team, known for her aggressive topspin game and consistency at continental competitions.

Overall, the February rankings highlight a challenging start to the 2026 season for Nigerian table tennis, with players now looking to regain momentum and ground on both the African and global stages in upcoming ITTF events.
