Nigerians Back Chelle for Contract Extension Despite Semi-Final Exit

Despite Nigeria’s semi-final exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, football fans across the country have praised the Super Eagles’ performances and called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to extend the contract of head coach Eric Chelle, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Super Eagles were eliminated on Wednesday after a dramatic 2–4 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco, following a goalless 120 minutes in the semi-final. However, the result did little to dampen the mood among supporters, many of whom expressed satisfaction with the team’s display and the progress made under Chelle.

Taking to social media after the match, fans commended the team’s resilience, tactical discipline and attacking intent throughout the tournament.

Akin Ajibade wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Gallant Eagles, hold your heads high. You have made Nigerians happy with your football artistry. Even though the trophy is out of reach, you have done well.”

On Facebook, Ejuke Chinedum highlighted the team’s development since Chelle’s appointment. “The improvement in just one year under Eric Chelle is commendable. It’s been a long time since we saw the Super Eagles play with such confidence and professionalism,” he wrote.

Another supporter, Jinadu, urged the NFF to act decisively, warning against repeating past mistakes. He referenced the period following the dismissal of former coach Gernot Rohr, which preceded Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup.

“The NFF should avoid past errors. They should move quickly to extend Eric Chelle’s contract,” Jinadu said.

With widespread public backing and clear signs of progress, pressure is now mounting on the NFF to clarify Chelle’s future as the Super Eagles look ahead to upcoming international commitments.
