Nigerians Debate Chelle’s Worth Over $130,000 Monthly Pay Request

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has become the subject of intense public debate following reports that he is seeking a monthly salary of $130,000, a figure that has divided opinion among Nigerian football supporters.

While some fans argue that Chelle’s performance justifies an improved contract, others insist that his reported demand exceeds what the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) can reasonably afford.

Chelle enhanced his reputation after guiding the Nigeria national football team to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Beyond the podium result, many observers praised the team’s style of play and tactical discipline during the tournament, leading to renewed public confidence in his leadership.

The reported salary request has, however, introduced uncertainty over his future.

On social media, reactions have been mixed. A Facebook user, Adebola Michael, acknowledged Chelle’s contributions but questioned the scale of the demand. “While I respect what Chelle has done so far, I think he’s not being realistic with his demands ($130,000 per month),” he wrote, adding that the coach should consider whether the NFF is financially capable of meeting such terms.

Others argue that the federation must be prepared either to meet the coach’s expectations or secure a capable replacement. One commenter suggested that Chelle should be allowed to leave if no compromise can be reached, provided the NFF can guarantee a suitable successor.

Conversely, several supporters have urged the federation to retain him, warning that losing Chelle could destabilise a team that has begun to show cohesion. They point to positive endorsements from key players, including striker Victor Osimhen and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, as evidence that the squad has embraced his methods.

Chelle was appointed in January 2024 on a two-year contract and still has one year remaining on his current deal. Whether the NFF will agree to revised terms — or opt for a new direction — remains to be seen, but the debate underscores the high expectations surrounding the national team’s future.
