Victor Osimhen did not feature, but his absence loomed large as Galatasaray suffered a damaging 2–0 defeat to Konyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday evening.

The reigning champions entered the fixture as firm favourites against a Konyaspor side winless in 12 matches. Yet without their talismanic Nigerian striker, Galatasaray’s attacking edge appeared blunted, and the result has tightened the title race significantly.

Precaution Proves Costly

Osimhen was withdrawn late from the travelling squad after reporting persistent pain in his right knee. The club described the decision as precautionary, prioritising his availability for their upcoming UEFA Champions League second leg in Turin following a commanding 5–2 first-leg victory over Juventus FC.

While the move may serve long-term ambitions, it proved costly domestically.

Dominance Without Penetration

Galatasaray controlled 62 per cent of possession and applied sustained pressure, but struggled to convert territorial dominance into clear-cut chances.

With Osimhen unavailable, defensive attention centred squarely on Mauro Icardi. The Argentine, who had netted a hat-trick the previous weekend, was effectively neutralised, finishing the match without a shot on target for the first time in months.

Ordinarily, the partnership between Icardi and Osimhen forces opponents into difficult defensive decisions. Without the Nigerian’s movement and physical presence, Konyaspor were able to compress space, crowd Icardi and challenge Galatasaray’s wide players to make the difference.

A swift counter-attack culminated in Blaz Kramer doubling the lead and effectively sealing the contest.

Although Galatasaray remain top of the Super Lig standings, the gap to their nearest challengers has narrowed. More significantly, the defeat underlined the team’s heavy reliance on their dual-striker system.
