Okoye’s Resurgence Reignites Super Eagles Goalkeeping Rivalry Ahead of World Cup Playoffs

As Nigeria prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, a fierce debate is brewing over who should start between the posts Stanley Nwabali or Maduka Okoye, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

For nearly a year, Nwabali has been Nigeria’s undisputed No. 1 since breaking into the squad shortly before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. His commanding presence and calm performances helped stabilize a Super Eagles side struggling for consistency in goal.

However, recent mistakes and disciplinary lapses have drawn criticism, opening the door for a renewed challenge from Okoye, whose form at Udinese has forced his name back into the national team conversation.

Nwabali’s costly error against Lesotho in the penultimate qualifying round which led to a conceded goal in a must-win fixture sparked frustration among fans. The Chippa United goalkeeper has also faced scrutiny for time-wasting and unnecessary bookings.

Statistics this season highlight his mixed form: in 10 league appearances, Nwabali has managed just one clean sheet, conceding 17 goals and saving 19 of 33 shots faced.

Meanwhile, Okoye has quietly rebuilt his confidence in Italy after a difficult spell. The 24-year-old, who was sidelined for two months earlier this year, has returned strongly for Udinese, conceding six goals in four games while keeping one clean sheet and saving 12 of 18 shots.

Okoye’s resurgence comes at a crucial time. He has not featured regularly for Nigeria since his costly blunder in the 2021 AFCON Round of 16 defeat to Tunisia, an error that led to his long absence from the national setup. Although he was recalled by former coach Finidi George in May 2024, he has yet to reclaim the No. 1 shirt.

With both goalkeepers available, head coach Eric Chelle now faces a significant decision as the Super Eagles camp opens in Morocco ahead of the November 13 semifinal clash with Gabon, and a potential final against either DR Congo or Cameroon three days later.

Chelle, however, has made his stance clear publicly backing Nwabali despite recent criticisms.

 “I need players with character,” Chelle told Eagle FM. “Maybe sometimes he needs to relax, but Stanley gives everything for his team and country. He makes mistakes, yes, but his commitment cannot be questioned.”

While Nigerians continue to debate who deserves the gloves, many analysts believe the renewed competition between Nwabali and Okoye could ultimately strengthen the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department as the team chases a return to the global stage.
