The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honorable Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has pledged her full support for the development of women’s football in the Federal Capital Territory, with the FCC boss set to grace the opening ceremony of the 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament on Friday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Omidiran made the commitment when she received the President of HerGame Foundation and FCT Football Association Board Member, Dr Pat Adjuma Ayegba, who paid a courtesy visit to her office in Abuja ahead of the tournament on Thursday.

The tournament, organised by the Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCT FA), brings together female football teams from the six Area Councils of the FCT and is designed to identify, develop and promote promising talents at the grassroots.

Expressing delight over the visit, Omidiran said she had been looking forward to meeting Ayegba, describing their shared passion for the development of the girl child as a strong basis for collaboration.

“I’m very, very happy that she was able to make it to my office today. I’ve been looking forward to meeting her, likewise she has been looking forward to seeing me as well,” Omidiran said.

“We are sort of kindred spirits. We love the girl child. We want the development of the girl child on all fronts. And that’s why I’m fully supporting the foundation, and I’m willing to show up tomorrow at the opening ceremony of the Inter-Area Council.”

The FCC chairman said her decision to attend the tournament was borne out of her belief in initiatives that provide young girls with opportunities to develop their talents and pursue meaningful careers through sport.

“It’s the kind of thing that I used to do, that I still do, and so she needs my full support, and I’m ready to give it,” she added.

Omidiran also described the tournament as a fresh starting point for the revitalisation of women’s football development in the FCT, expressing optimism that the initiative would grow stronger with sustained support.

“It’s a new beginning. You see how far we have fallen, so we need to start from the beginning again, and this is our way of starting. I think that it’s going to get better from now on,” she said.

The 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament kicks off on Friday, August 21, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 10am.

Six Area Councils—Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali—will compete for honours, with the councils divided into two groups

Group A comprises Bwari, Gwagwalada and AMAC, while Group B features Abaji, Kuje and Kwali.

The group stage will be played on a home-and-away basis before the semi-finals on September 2 and the grand finale on September 5.

Omidiran’s attendance is expected to add further visibility and institutional support to a tournament organisers believe can provide a pathway for talented young female footballers in the FCT to progress into professional and international football.
