Ondo Wrestlers Shine As Bayelsa, Rivers Claim Key Titles

Ondo State delivered a commanding performance in the women’s events on Day 6 of the 4th Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics, held in Yenagoa on Monday, March 30, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Leading the charge was African champion Khadijat Idris, who reaffirmed her pedigree in the women’s 55kg category. Representing Ondo State, Idris secured a decisive victory over Bayelsa’s rising talent, Mary Ayeloh, winning by technical superiority. Delta State’s Happiness Soso and Lagos State’s Augustine Rhoda both claimed bronze medals in the category.

In the women’s 76kg division, Ondo State’s Damola Ojo successfully defended her title with an unbeaten run in the round-robin format. Nigeria Army’s Laide Ojo finished second, with her only defeat coming against the eventual champion. Bronze medals were awarded to Juliet Ogo of Bayelsa State and Mercy Alison of Abia State.

Bayelsa State found success in the 62kg category, where Patience Kakanda delivered a standout performance to defeat Nigeria Army’s Precious Tieberi 3–1 in the final, clinching the gold medal.

In the women’s 59kg event, Rivers State’s Esther Asaolu maintained her dominance, retaining her title after overcoming all her opponents in the round-robin competition. Bayelsa’s Patience Opuene finished with silver, while Waliyat Adeniran of Ondo State and Queen Essien of the Nigeria Army took bronze.

The day also featured men’s events, with Bayelsa State athletes excelling. Solomon Ulabo won gold in the 79kg category, ahead of Edo State’s Kpum Ayibasisei, while Rasheed Saliu of Ondo State and Ebisindei Okorie of Dynamite Club secured bronze medals.

In the 92kg division, Bayelsa’s NewLife Ebikeme emerged champion, defeating Edo State’s Perezidei Obaze in the final. Tobechukwu Udeh of the Nigeria Army and Timilehin Adekanmi of Ondo State claimed bronze medals.

Overall, Day 6 of the competition showcased strong performances across multiple states, with Ondo State particularly impressive in the women’s categories.
