Onuachu Downplays Relegation Clause Question In Southampton Contract

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has shied away from questions regarding if he had a relegation clause inserted into his contract at Southampton that would allow him to leave the club if they drop out of the Premier League, BSNSports.com.ng has gathered.

The 6ft 7ins striker joined Saints from Belgian side Genk in January for a reported £ 18 million fee plus add-ons but has so far failed to find the back of the net in six appearances for the club.

In reply, he told Elegbete TV Sports: "Right now, we are still in the Premier League so we are working hard week in, week out playing games.

"There are some games we've been unlucky even if we play well. Right now it's just to focus on the Premier League and try to stay up. When the other time comes, I think we'll talk about that, but right now we just focus on the Premier League."

Onuachu was an unused substitute for Southampton's last game at home to Tottenham Hotspur, with Saints coming from behind twice to draw 3-3 thanks to goals from Che Adams, Theo Walcott, and James Ward-Prowse.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte launched into an explosive rant during his post-match press conference when assessing the performance of players, labeling it as "unacceptable".

Onuachu was asked about the outburst and said: "I'm talking about my team, to be honest, we deserved if not to win, then we deserved a point in that game. My team Southampton played a good game that day. The boys put in a good shift, everybody worked for each other. To be honest, we deserved this point.

"Antonio Conte ranting I think that should be his way of talking to his players. But for me, I'm just talking about my team, we put in a good shift that day and I think we deserved a point."
