Onyeamaechi Reveals What Peseiro Did To Him In 2023

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyeamaechi has opened up on his frustrating experience under former head coach José Peseiro during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Olympiakos of Greece left-back was part of Nigeria’s squad to the tournament but failed to make a single appearance throughout the competition, despite the Super Eagles’ long run.

Speaking to reporters in Morocco, where Nigeria are currently participating in the 2025 AFCON, Onyeamaechi disclosed that he personally appealed to Peseiro for a chance to play, but his requests were turned down.

“You know, when a coach gives you the opportunity, you need to take it. I remember the last AFCON,” Onyeamaechi said.

“I was begging for the opportunity but Peseiro did not give me. So right now, I’ve learned from experience to be ready whenever they call you.”

The 28-year-old added that the experience has shaped his mentality and approach to national team duty, stressing the importance of patience and preparedness.

“That is the most important thing, and I give God all the glory for this moment,” he concluded.

Onyeamaechi has since become a key figure in the Super Eagles setup at the ongoing 2025 AFCON in Morocco, enjoying increased trust and regular involvement under the current technical crew.
