Onyeka Becomes 9th Nigerian Player Who Lift English Championship Trophy

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined the growing list of Nigerian players to have lifted the EFL Championship trophy, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Coventry City were confirmed winners of the Championship on Sunday, with Onyeka playing a key role throughout the campaign as the club secured promotion to the English Premier League.

The industrious midfielder becomes one of the few Nigerians to achieve the feat since the competition was rebranded in 2004, further underlining his importance in Coventry City’s successful season.

Onyeka now joins a distinguished list of Nigerian players who have lifted the trophy in recent years. 

The 2023/24 season saw Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho achieve the milestone, while Nathan Tella was part of the title-winning side in the 2022/23 campaign.

Other Nigerians to have won the Championship title include Bright Enobakhare and Carl Ikeme in the 2017/18 season, Sammy Ameobi in 2016/17, Danny Shittu in 2010/11, Shola Ameobi in 2009/10, and Eric Obinna in the 2005/06 season.

Onyeka’s achievement adds another chapter to Nigeria’s growing legacy in the English second tier, as more players from the country continue to make their mark in European football.
