Onyemaechi Welcomes First Child, To Miss Super Eagles Friendly
By Niyi Busari
Bruno Onyemaechi is set to miss Nigeria national football team’s upcoming international friendly against Jordan national football team after welcoming his first child with partner Ines Fontes.
The defender confirmed the development over the weekend, sharing images from the hospital and describing the birth as the “best gift ever.” His absence from recent training sessions, following Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Iran national football team, had initially raised questions among observers.
Onyemaechi, 26, has been in a relationship with Fontes since 2022. The couple had earlier announced they were expecting a child in March, with Fontes frequently seen supporting the player during his time at Boavista F.C..
The full-back temporarily stepped away from national team duties to be present for the birth, a move consistent with standard practice among professional players.
His absence presents a selection challenge for head coach Eric Chelle ahead of the clash with Jordan. Sources close to the team suggest Onyemaechi is unlikely to return in time for the fixture due to the short turnaround.
In his absence, Zaidu Sanusi is expected to deputise at left-back. Sanusi offers experience and attacking impetus, although his style contrasts with Onyemaechi’s more defensively focused approach.
