OGC Nice striker Victor Orakpo from France has shared his inspiring journey from playing street football in Nigeria to becoming a professional player in Europe, reports BSNSports.com.ng.
Orakpo, a standout performer in the 2022 FC Bayern Youth Cup, was signed by the French Ligue 1 club during the 2024 Winter Transfer window after impressing during a trial period.
He initially joined their elite reserve squad. Before his move to Europe, Orakpo developed his skills at FC Bako and later at VOE Football Academy, which is part of the FC Bayern Munich international network in Nigeria.
Reflecting on his journey, Orakpo spoke about the challenges of transitioning from grassroots football to the professional level.
"At first, it was a little difficult,” he said.
“Coming straight from street football, I had to quickly adapt to a high-performance environment. I remained focused and committed, with a clear vision of my goals. I knew where I was coming from and where I wanted to go. Whether on the pitch, in training, or at the gym, I gave it my all.”
Orakpo also offered words of encouragement to young, aspiring footballers in Nigeria and beyond: “My advice to the youth is to keep working hard, stay committed, have faith, and believe in yourself. It may take time, but everything will work out. Dedication and consistency are key.”
