Oshodi’s Appointment Into WTT Board Signals Africa’s Rising Influence in Global Table Tennis

Nigeria’s Wahid Oshodi has been appointed to the Board of World Table Tennis (WTT), marking a historic milestone as the first African to serve as a full director on the governing body’s commercial arm, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The appointment was confirmed during the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Executive Board meeting held at the WTT Headquarters in Singapore, where leadership portfolios within the organization were also allocated.

Following the board’s decisions, ITTF President Petra Sörling and Executive Vice President Wahid Oshodi were selected to represent the International Table Tennis Federation on the board of World Table Tennis.

Sörling, who also assumes the role of Chair of the WTT Board, described the appointments as a demonstration of the ITTF’s commitment to strengthening oversight and governance within the organization’s commercial operations.

She noted that the federation remains central to the development of the sport globally, while WTT serves as the platform for expanding its commercial reach and global appeal.

“The ITTF has always been the foundation on which table tennis thrives, and WTT is our instrument to take it further,” Sörling said. “As Chair of the Board, I am here to ensure that WTT operates with profitability, governance, accountability, and long-term vision. The potential is significant, and what we owe players, fans, and the broader table tennis community is the discipline to realise it.”

Oshodi, who also serves as President of the African Table Tennis Federation, welcomed the opportunity and reiterated his commitment to strengthening governance structures and advancing the growth of the sport, particularly across Africa.

According to him, sustainable development in sports administration depends heavily on strong institutional frameworks.

“Strong governance is what gives an organisation the structure to grow sustainably. I look forward to contributing to that work as the Board focuses on putting solid foundations in place for WTT’s long-term development,” Oshodi said.

His appointment represents a significant moment for African table tennis, highlighting the continent’s growing influence within global sports administration.
