Over 20,000 Athletes Registered As Lagos City Marathon Nears

By Niyi Busari

With just 15 days remaining to the 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, organisers have confirmed that more than 20,000 athletes from Nigeria and across the world have registered for the prestigious road race, underscoring its growing stature on the global athletics calendar, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The surge in registration reflects the marathon’s rising international appeal and its reputation as one of Africa’s leading mass-participation sporting events. Organisers say the increasing interest has been complemented by strong corporate support, with sponsors reaffirming their commitment to an event widely celebrated for its world-class organisation and competitive atmosphere.

In a significant development for its 11th edition, the marathon will feature a new race route. For the first time, the 42-kilometre race will begin at ORCA Mall on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, pass through sections of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, and conclude at the iconic Eko Atlantic City.

Scheduled for Saturday, 14 February 2026, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is expected to once again turn Lagos into a global running hub, as elite and recreational athletes alike converge to compete for honours, personal milestones, and national pride along the streets of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The event continues to enjoy the backing of several major partners, including headline sponsor Access Bank, the Lagos State Government, 7Up, Kia Motors, Power Oil, Brila FM, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Unilever, Eko Atlantic, Aquafina, Salonpas, Joy, Rexona, Easy Tipping, Robb, Greenlife Pharmaceuticals, Morning Fresh, among others.
