Over 400 Athletes Set For AFN Golden League Season Opener In Benin

Nigeria’s athletics season shifts into full gear on Monday as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) launches its maiden Golden League series in Benin City, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The two-day competition, scheduled for March 2–3 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, is officially listed on the World Athletics calendar, underlining its significance on both the domestic and international stage. The initiative marks a major step in the federation’s renewed technical direction under AFN Technical Director, Gabriel Okon.

A total of 412 athletes have registered to compete in 28 events across men’s and women’s categories, setting the stage for an intense and competitive season opener. National Team athletes currently in camp in Asaba are also expected to use the meet to assess their preparation and gauge performance levels ahead of a demanding international calendar.

Competition begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, with the women’s 5,000 metres final opening proceedings.

The Golden League series is structured into three distinct tiers — Premium, Classics and Promotional — a format designed to reward excellence while broadening the competitive base and strengthening Nigeria’s talent pipeline.

The four Premium events feature the blue-riband 100 metres and 400 metres races for men and women, with cash prizes reserved for winners.

Eight Classics events will also offer financial incentives. These include the women’s 100 metres hurdles, men’s 110 metres hurdles, men’s triple jump and javelin, women’s 800 metres, men’s 1,500 metres, and the women’s long jump and high jump.

The Promotional category focuses on expanding participation and nurturing emerging talent, reinforcing the federation’s emphasis on long-term athlete development.

Okon described the Golden League as a critical platform for ensuring Nigerian athletes enjoy consistent, high-level competition throughout the year, noting that regular exposure remains essential for international success.

He also commended AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, for endorsing the initiative and approving financial incentives aimed at motivating top performers.

The Benin City opener signals what the federation hopes will be a transformative chapter for athletics in Nigeria.
