Oyo SWAN Refutes Allegation Of Receiving ₦250,000 From Sports Commissioner
Sampson Adedeji
The Oyo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has strongly denied claims that it collected ₦250,000 from the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, after the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Rwanda, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
In a statement signed by the State Chairman, Mr. Ayomiku Ajibola, the association dismissed the allegation as false and malicious, describing it as a deliberate attempt to tarnish SWAN’s image.
“The Oyo SWAN Executive Committee never received any amount of money, whether ₦250,000 or any other sum, from the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke,” Ajibola declared.
He further challenged those behind the claim to provide credible evidence, insisting that the story was fabricated with the sole intention of discrediting the association.
The leadership of Oyo SWAN urged the public to disregard what it described as baseless misinformation.
The development comes amid a strained relationship between the State Ministry of Youth and Sports and Oyo SWAN.
Last month, the association criticized the ministry for excluding its accredited members from a pre-match press briefing ahead of the Nigeria vs Rwanda fixture, an action it labeled as disrespectful.
In response, Oyo SWAN demanded an official apology from the commissioner for sidelining its members. As of the time of filing this report, Hon. Adegoke has yet to react to the association’s demand.
