South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, has confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be introduced in the country’s top-flight league next season, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
McKenzie made the announcement while outlining efforts to improve officiating standards and enhance the credibility of the domestic competition.
“VAR will be introduced in the South African Premier Football next season,” he stated.
“We are working with the South Africa Football Association to achieve this.”
The implementation of VAR is expected to mark a significant milestone for the Premier Soccer League (PSL), widely regarded as one of the foremost leagues on the African continent.
The introduction of the technology is aimed at reducing refereeing errors, improving match decisions on key incidents such as goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity, and aligning the league with global standards.
