Penalty Heroics Send Egypt Past Australia into World Cup Round Of 16

Egypt made history on Friday by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout to secure the country's first-ever victory in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Egypt converting all four of their penalties in the shootout. Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to convert from the spot, handing Egypt a landmark triumph.

In a bold tactical move moments before the shootout, Australia head coach Tony Popovich substituted goalkeeper Patrick Beach for veteran Mathew Ryan in an attempt to gain an edge during the penalties. The change, however, failed to prevent Egypt from completing a flawless shootout performance.

Egypt had taken the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, but Australia drew level after an own goal by defender Mohamed Hany. The incident marked Hany's second own goal of the tournament, making him the first player to score two own goals in a single FIFA World Cup.

Neither side was able to find a winner during 30 minutes of extra time, sending the contest to penalties. With both nations chasing their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match, Egypt held their nerve to seal a historic result and advance to the next round.
