The Northern Amateur Women Football Association (NAWFA) kicked off its maiden league season on Monday in Jos, Plateau State, with dominant performances from Plateau United Queens, Afunkoyo Babes, and SIK Paragon FC.
The opening round of matches, following Sunday’s official draw ceremony, marked a historic step in the development of grassroots women’s football in Northern Nigeria. Ten teams were drawn into two groups of five ahead of the weeklong competition.
Plateau United Queens made a strong statement on home turf with a commanding 10–0 victory over Zango Queens of Kaduna. Afunkoyo Babes of Taraba also impressed with a 3–0 triumph over Blessed KA, while Jos-based SIK Paragon FC defeated fellow locals Jazzy Damsels Stars 2–0. Bwaraune Babes of Adamawa edged Jewel Queens of Gombe 1–0 in a tightly contested encounter.
NAWFA Interim Chairman, Moses Bako, described the league's commencement as a major milestone, thanking the Plateau State government for hosting the historic edition and commending the Plateau State Football Association for facilitating the arrangement.
“We’re thrilled to see the league finally come alive. The energy, passion, and talent we witnessed so far reaffirm why this initiative matters,” Bako stated.
“We’re grateful to the Plateau State government for graciously accepting to host this historic first edition, and we deeply appreciate the Plateau State FA for their pivotal role in making it happen,” he added.
“This league is more than a competition—it is a platform to discover, nurture, and showcase the incredible female football talent scattered across the North. We are just getting started, and the future is bright.”
