Plateau United Queens Crowned Inaugural NAWFA League Champions in Jos

Plateau United Queens emerged as the first-ever champions of the Northern Amateur Women Football Association (NAWFA) League after edging Joy K. Angels 4–3 on penalties in a tense final played at Saint John College pitch in Jos, Plateau State.

The match ended 1–1 after regulation time, forcing a shootout where Plateau Queens held their nerve to lift the historic trophy. Both sides had finished top of their respective groups with 12 points apiece, setting the stage for a fittingly competitive finale.

Ten teams participated in the maiden edition of the NAWFA League, which was held over five days and showcased emerging talents from across Northern Nigeria.

Speaking after the final, NAWFA Interim Chairman, Moses Bako, expressed satisfaction at the successful staging of the tournament and hailed the efforts of all involved.

"With immense gratitude and joy, we reflect on the successful conclusion of the NAWFA competition. First and foremost, we thank God for guiding us throughout this tournament. We are grateful that we started and finished without any major incidents, casualties, injuries, or rancour," Bako said.

He thanked the Plateau Football Association (PFA) for their critical support and hospitality, noting their commitment to securing government assistance for the tournament. He also recognized the contributions of individuals and volunteers who were instrumental to the success of the competition.

"A huge thank you to Ceemonie and Sarah Nnodim Ikechukwu, who spent their personal resources to help us achieve our aim. Their contributions were invaluable," Bako added.

Highlighting the impact of the competition, Bako announced that seven players had already been identified by three Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership clubs, underscoring the tournament’s role in providing a platform for undiscovered talents.

"Once again, thank you to everyone involved in making this competition a success. Let's celebrate our achievements and look forward to a brighter future for women's football in our region," he concluded.

The successful hosting of the inaugural NAWFA League is seen as a major step toward the growth of amateur women's football across Northern Nigeria, with plans already underway for an even bigger second edition.
