An aide to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has opened up on the underlying issues that contributed to Nigeria’s disappointing performance against DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup playoff second leg, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking with journalist Osasuo Obayiuwana, the aide disclosed that the Nigerian team experienced a strange incident during the match, which affected their momentum and concentration but went unnoticed by the match officials.

According to him, the incident significantly disrupted the flow of the game and left the players unsettled.

“Something strange happened during this game. And the referee did nothing about it,” he revealed.

He also appealed to Nigerians to rally behind Coach Chelle rather than criticize him harshly, noting that the manager is deeply passionate and committed to achieving success for the country.

 “I agree, Eric needs to control his temper. He is a very emotional person. But he is this passionate because he wants to succeed for Nigeria, not for himself. Eric needs support, not condemnation, at this time. Football is a sport of great emotion and things happen all the time.”

The defeat to DR Congo ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, sparking outrage among fans and calls for major changes within the team.

However, Chelle’s camp believes unity, patience, and support are essential in rebuilding the squad ahead of future competitions.
