Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Udodi Onwuzurike produced encouraging performances ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing third-place finishes at the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

African shot put record holder Enekwechi placed third in the men's shot put with a best throw of 21.48 metres. Italy's Leonardo Fabbri won the event with a throw of 22.04 metres, while Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell claimed second place with 21.52 metres.

On the track, Onwuzurike equalled his season's best of 20.18 seconds to finish third in the men's 200 metres. Morocco's Yassine Hssine won the race in a national record time of 19.92 seconds, with Zimbabwe's Makanakaishe Charamba taking second in 20.09 seconds.

The podium finishes provide a timely confidence boost for Team Nigeria as athletes intensify preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Elsewhere at the Budapest meet, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme claimed victory in the men's 100 metres with a time of 9.99 seconds, finishing ahead of Ghana's Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, who clocked 10.01 seconds, and Jamaica's Ackeem Blake, who crossed the line in 10.04 seconds.

In the men's 400 metres, Zambia's Muzala Samukonga continued his impressive season by posting a season's best 44.02 seconds to take first place, highlighting the strong form of several African athletes heading into the Commonwealth Games.
