Post-NSF: Kano Governor Immortalizes 22 Athletes In Tragic Accident

Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has immortalised the 22 Team Kano athletes that died in a tragic accident on their way back to Kano from the National Sports Festival held in May 2025, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a statement issued by Mustapha Muhammad, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Yusuf said the Kano State Sports Institute is now named after the 22 Athletes and should be Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute.

The statement further said, the Kano State Sports Commission would be named as Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.

Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, made this known during a courtesy visit by the team of First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs. Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who donated One Hundred and Ten Million naira (₦110, 000, 000) to the families of the 22 Athletes who died in a tragic accident just 5 kilometers away from Kano.

 The governor said they are heroes who fought for the success of Kano in the National Sports Festival.

The governor stated that the state government will take care of their children's education and their wives will be engaged in government empowerment schemes.
