 Qatar 2022: PFAN Condemns Action Of Fans After The Nigeria vs Ghana Clash in Abuja

Nigeria fans stormed the football pitch of the newly refurbished Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja after the Super Eagles' failure to make the 2022 World Cup; tearing down dugouts, advertising boards, goalposts and clashing with the police.

This action by the fans met stern condemnation by the President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), Comrade Tijani Babangida MON.

In his words, "The action of the fans after the game today is uncalled for and doesn't speak well of us as a people" he began. 

"A lot of money was put into the renovation of the Stadium that has been moribund for over a decade. It is pathetic that a group of irate fans could vent their anger on the facility" he said.

"As a Union, we condemn the act of the fans in its entirety as there is no reason for them to destroy government properties. This is indeed taking us backwards as a nation."

"I urge Nigerians to see the loss of the Qatar ticket as a clarion call for us to look inwards and fight those things that tend to destroy the tranquility and peaceful coexistence we have been enjoying as a nation."

The game he said, would have healed the wounds of the bombings and train incident, noting that there is nothing we could do in this contest. He however prayed for the souls of those that lost their lives to find rest with the Almighty. 

On the game, the president had this to say: "We would bounce back and I assure Nigerians we will surely get it right.

The boys gave it their all, but their all wasn't good enough to get us the desired ticket to Qatar 2022."

Tear gas was deployed by the authorities at the Abuja National Stadium on Tuesday night after the final whistle prompted an angry pitch invasion.
