Racism Overshadows Egypt–Spain Friendly As Egypt FA Calls For Action

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has issued a strong condemnation of racist behavior displayed during Egypt’s international friendly against Spain at Espanyol Stadium in Barcelona, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to an official statement, a section of spectators engaged in racist chanting and expressions during the match, alongside acts of disrespect toward the Egyptian national anthem. The EFA described the incidents as “reprehensible” and emphasized that such conduct has no place in football or society at large.

“These actions represent an unacceptable and troubling phenomenon that must be collectively confronted and eradicated,” the statement read, underscoring the association’s zero-tolerance stance on discrimination.

The EFA also acknowledged and welcomed the swift response from Spanish authorities. Statements condemning the incident were issued by the Spanish Football Federation, the Ministry of Sport, and prominent figures within Spanish football, all of whom denounced the behavior witnessed at the stadium.

On the pitch, Egypt delivered a resilient and competitive performance, holding their own against the hosts in what served as a key preparatory fixture ahead of upcoming FIFA World Cup competitions.

EFA President Hany Abo Rida, acting in his international capacity, is reportedly engaging with FIFA officials and global football stakeholders to address and prevent similar incidents. The association reiterated FIFA’s ongoing commitment to combating racism and discrimination within the sport and called for stronger preventative measures across all competitions.

Despite the incident, the EFA stressed that the actions of a small group of fans would not damage the longstanding and positive relationship between Egyptian and Spanish football authorities. The association highlighted the overall warm reception afforded to the Egyptian delegation in Barcelona, as well as the cooperation and support provided by local organizers.

The EFA concluded by reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to fostering international sporting ties, emphasizing its readiness to host Spanish football representatives and other nations in an environment defined by respect, hospitality, and cultural exchange.
