Record-breaking Mbappé Inspires France to Winning Start in Group L

Kylian Mbappé scored twice and Bradley Barcola added another as France opened their FIFA World Cup Group I campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal at the New York New Jersey Stadium, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The fixture carried historical significance, with France eager to avoid a repeat of their shock defeat to Senegal in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup. More than two decades later, Didier Deschamps’ side ensured history would not repeat itself.

After a cagey and tactical first half that ended goalless, France found another gear after the restart and eventually overwhelmed their African opponents with their attacking quality.

France controlled possession for much of the opening period, patiently searching for openings against a disciplined Senegal defence. The Lions of Teranga remained organised and threatened sporadically on the counterattack, but clear-cut chances were limited at both ends.

Goalkeepers Mike Maignan and Édouard Mendy enjoyed relatively quiet first halves as neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval.

The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute through Mbappé. The French captain collected the ball outside the penalty area before driving forward and unleashing a powerful right-footed effort that beat Mendy and flew into the bottom corner.

The goal opened up the contest as Senegal pushed forward in pursuit of an equaliser. France exploited the additional space, with Mbappé, Michael Olise and Adrien Rabiot increasingly influential in the final third.

Their pressure paid off again in the 82nd minute when substitute Bradley Barcola doubled France’s advantage. The forward latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Rabiot before calmly finishing beyond the advancing Mendy to put the result seemingly beyond doubt.

Senegal, however, refused to surrender. Deep into stoppage time, teenager Ibrahim Mbaye gave his side a glimmer of hope when he controlled the ball expertly inside the box and fired a low shot past Maignan in the 94th minute.

Any thoughts of a dramatic comeback were quickly extinguished. France responded almost immediately as Olise released Mbappé in space during added time. The skipper surged forward and unleashed another powerful strike that found the back of the net, completing his brace and sealing a deserved French victory.

Mbappé’s two-goal display highlighted his importance to France’s ambitions of challenging for another World Cup title, while Barcola’s contribution underlined the depth and quality available to Deschamps’ squad.

Despite the defeat, Senegal can take encouragement from the performance of young scorer Ibrahim Mbaye and the team’s determination throughout the contest. However, France’s superior quality in key moments ultimately proved decisive.

The victory gives France an ideal start in Group I and strengthens their position in the early stages of the tournament, while Senegal will look to bounce back in their next outing to keep their qualification hopes alive.
