Referee Shot Dead as Violence Erupts During Football Match

By Our Reporter

A football match in Ecuador turned tragic after a referee was shot dead in a shocking act of violence that unfolded in front of players and spectators.

The victim, 48-year-old Javier Ortega, was officiating an amateur league fixture when unidentified gunmen reportedly stormed the pitch and opened fire. The incident occurred in Pasaje, located in El Oro Province, sending panic through the venue.

Eyewitnesses said Ortega collapsed on the field as the attackers fled. Emergency responders arrived promptly but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The match was immediately abandoned as players and fans scrambled for safety.

Police have launched an investigation into the killing, with authorities reviewing mobile phone footage and interviewing witnesses. A police spokesperson described the incident as “a cold-blooded crime committed in a space meant for community and sport.”

Refereeing bodies and football stakeholders have since condemned the attack, calling for improved security at grassroots matches. One official described Ortega as a committed referee, stressing that “to lose a life over a game of football is unacceptable.”

The killing has intensified concerns over rising violence in Ecuador, where criminal activity has increasingly spilled into public and community spaces. Over the past five years, the country has experienced a surge in gang-related violence, often linked to transnational criminal networks.

Despite security measures introduced by President Daniel Noboa, authorities continue to grapple with escalating crime rates. In 2025, Ecuador recorded the highest level of violent deaths in its history, with a homicide rate of 51 per 100,000 residents, according to the Geneva-based Organised Crime Observatory.

Investigations into Ortega’s killing remain ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
