Renewed Hope Unity Cup To Feature Grassroots Teams From All 774 LGAs

All 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Nigeria are expected to participate in the inaugural Renewed Hope Unity Cup, a nationwide grassroots football tournament scheduled to run from October 1 to December 1, 2026, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The competition received a major boost with the endorsement of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), both of which described the initiative as a strategic platform for promoting national unity, discovering football talent and advancing youth development.

The endorsement was announced during the unveiling of the tournament's official logo, where the two bodies pledged their support for what organisers described as one of Nigeria's most ambitious grassroots football programmes.

Representing the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Commission's Director of Facilities, Dr. Muhammad Rabiu, said football remains the ideal vehicle for fostering unity because of its widespread appeal across the country.

He described the tournament's logo as more than a visual identity, saying it symbolises the vision and aspirations of the competition.

"The logo is beyond just an image; it's a symbol. Anytime you see this, you begin to look at the faces here," Rabiu said.

Rabiu also highlighted the Federal Government's renewed investment in sports infrastructure, noting that more than ₦200 billion has been allocated to sports facilities after four years without maintenance funding.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting sports development, adding that the Commission is committed to making Nigeria Africa's leading sporting nation.

National Coordinator and Convener of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup, Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, said the competition is designed to provide young footballers, particularly those from rural and underserved communities, with opportunities to showcase their talents before professional clubs, football academies and international scouts.

According to Kwande, participating teams will receive equipment and welfare support, while all matches will be professionally produced and streamed on digital platforms to broaden the tournament's reach and visibility.

He also announced a nationwide Train-the-Trainer programme that will equip selected coaches from each of Nigeria's 774 LGAs with modern coaching education, creating a sustainable framework for grassroots football development.

Describing the initiative as "a bold national investment in Nigeria's future," Kwande said the tournament aims to strengthen national cohesion while building a robust pipeline of football talent across the country.

Also speaking, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, represented by the Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Muhammed Nasir, commended the organisers for launching the competition.

Nasir described football as one of Nigeria's strongest instruments for national integration, noting that the sport transcends ethnicity, religion, political affiliation and social status.

He said the tournament would complement the NFF's talent identification programmes while promoting teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience and healthy competition among young Nigerians.

The NFF also urged the organisers to maintain high standards of fairness, transparency, professionalism and inclusiveness, expressing confidence that the Renewed Hope Unity Cup has the potential to become one of Nigeria's flagship grassroots football competitions.
