Rivalries Rekindled: Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon Clash at First West Africa Para Games

The longstanding sporting rivalry among Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon is set to take centre stage once again as the maiden West Africa Zones A & B Para Games officially kick off in Abeokuta, Ogun State, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

 The regional championship, which began yesterday, will run through December 4, 2025.

A large contingent of athletes and officials from Ghana, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Togo, and Niger Republic arrived in Nigeria last night and was scheduled to proceed to the Games Village in Abeokuta ahead of today’s opening ceremony.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Victor Achakpo, told The Guardian that the delegation from Côte d’Ivoire is expected to land in Lagos today, where officials will be on hand to receive them. “The flight itinerary from Côte d’Ivoire has been confirmed, and we have our team at the airport to welcome them on arrival,” he said.

Achakpo, a former baseball and softball player and current first vice president of the Baseball and Softball Federation of Nigeria, added that preparations for the Games are in full swing. All 13 members of the LOC appointed by the National Sports Commission (NSC) are already in Abeokuta working closely with Ogun State officials to ensure a seamless opening ceremony and smooth tournament operations.

President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, also confirmed that Sampson Deen, president of the Africa Paralympic Committee and a prominent Ghanaian sports administrator, is among the dignitaries expected to attend the event.

The inaugural Games will feature 12 sports, including Para Athletics, Para Swimming, Para Powerlifting, Para Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball (3×3), Sitting Volleyball, Amputee Football, Para Canoeing, Wheelchair Tennis, Para Badminton, Para Arm Wrestling, and Para Shooting.
