Sampson Adedeji
Despite not playing on Saturday, Rivers United have broken their six years no trophy jinx as they were confirmed as champions of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League season, BSNsports.com.ng reports.
Last season's champion, Akwa United handed Rivers United the title after they defeated Plateau United in one of the fixtures of Matchday 35.
This is Rivers United first major silverware since the merger of Sharks and Dolphins of Port-Harcourt in 2016.
Playing in the presence of the Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, David Onovo put the Promise Keepers ahead in the 12th minute.
Jesse Akila levelled the game for the away side in the 52nd minute before Leo Ezekiel sealed the game for Akwa United on the dot of 90th minute.
With the result, Plateau cannot catch Rivers United again as the point between them remained 10 with three games left to end the season.
It was a day not to forget for Kwara United as they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Niger Tornadoes.
Issa Gata's own goal opened the scoring for Tornadoes before Jonas Emmanuel made it 2-0 in the 19th minute.
Second half goals from Musa Wakili and Shamusideen Hashim sealed the win for the host.
The remaining 8 games are scheduled for Sunday.
