Tanzanian Premier League champions Young Africans (Yanga SC) have named Argentine Miguel Gamondi as the new head coach ahead of the new campaign.
Yanga SC beat 2022/23 Nigeria champions, Rivers United in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup last season.
The 46-year-old Gamondi is coming in to replace Nesreddine Nabi, who left the Timu ya Mwanananchi at the end of last season after helping them to win a treble – Community Shield, Premier League title, and Azam FA Cup.
“He has vast experience of coaching Africa teams and he is going to steer our club to prosperity in Caf Interclub contests,†Yanga’s Media and Communication Manager Ally Kamwe announced in Dar es Salaam on Saturday while confirming the arrival of the coach.
Gamondi’s arrival was a surprise announcement to their members who attended the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Julius Nyerere International Convention Center (JNICC) in the city.
Born in OlavarrÃa, Gamondi played for local side Club Ferrocarril Sud and after he retired, he managed several clubs in Argentina, including Ferro Carril Sud, Racing, El FortÃn, San MartÃn de Tucumán, and Racing Club de Avellaneda.
In 2000, Gamondi moved to Africa to join Oscar Fullone as an assistant coach to the Libyan side Al-Ahly. He also became an assistant coach to Fullone at the Burkina Faso national football team in December 2001, and would later become an assistant coach at ASEC Mimosas, Wydad Casablanca, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, and Etoile du Sahel.
He was appointed assistant manager to Ãngel Cappa at South African side Mamelodi Sundowns in 2005 and was named manager of Platinum Stars in December 2007. He led the Stars into the final 16 of the 2008 Caf Confederation Cup, its first foray into continental competition.
Later on, he managed CR Belouizdad and USM Alger in Algeria, Ittihad Kalba and Al Urooba in the United Arab Emirates, then Hassania Agadir, Wydad AC, and Ittihad Tanger in Morocco.
