Algerian football legend Riyad Mahrez has officially announced his retirement from international duty, bringing an illustrious chapter in the Desert Foxes' history to a close, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 35-year-old Manchester City winger made the announcement on Friday, ending a distinguished career with the Algerian national team that spanned over a decade and produced some of the country's most memorable moments on the global stage.

Widely regarded as one of Algeria's greatest-ever players, Mahrez leaves the international scene as a national hero.

 His crowning achievement came in 2019 when he played a pivotal role in guiding Algeria to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, scoring crucial goals and providing assists throughout the tournament as the team lifted the trophy for the second time in their history.

Mahrez also delivered unforgettable performances on the biggest stage of all, representing Algeria at multiple FIFA World Cups. 

His flair, technical brilliance, and leadership on the pitch earned him admiration from fans across Africa and beyond.

"After careful consideration and following discussions with my family and close ones, I have decided to retire from international football," Mahrez said in his announcement. 

"It has been an immense honour to represent Algeria and to contribute to the team's successes."

The former Leicester City star, who helped the Foxes to their historic Premier League title in 2016 before moving to Manchester City, accumulated dozens of caps for his country and established himself as a creative force and goal threat from the wings.

His retirement marks the end of an era for Algerian football, with many fans and pundits already hailing him as a true icon who elevated the profile of the national team on the world stage.
