Run Club Abuja (RCA) has brought respite to the Alheri Leprosy community in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, donating a variety of medical supplies ranging from antibiotics, anti-malaria, intravenous Infusions and many other medical consumables.

The intervention was funded by proceeds amounting to N8.5million raised during the Charity Half Marathon event RCA convened on July 13, 2024.

President of RCA, Buchi Onyegbule said the funds generated from the Charity Marathon will fund the humanitarian effort running from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, providing the services of two healthcare workers that will be domiciled in the colony and a continuous supply of medication during the period.

Mr Onyegbule also called on government to reduce the need for such gestures by ensuring that underserved communities were not overlooked. The RCA President explained that non-profit and charity organisations and individuals could only complement but were unable to meet the large scale of government capacity necessary to cater to the needs of communities like Alheri Village.

Nurse in Charge of Alheri Settlement Clinic, Halimat Yusuf expressed satisfaction that the medical supply and the provision of extra health personnel will boost the confidence of the community in the health facility. Halimat also disclosed that in the past, members of the community resorted to self medication.

Representing Norrenberger group, headline sponsors of the 2024 RCA Charity Half Marathon, Olademeji Adebo noted that the organisation keyed into the project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

One of the beneficiaries, the Youth Leader at the Leprosy Colony, Salisu Mohammed lamented that despite their continuous distress calls to the government; they are still yet to enjoy optimal healthcare delivery in the community but was filled with joy and gratitude for the positive gesture made by Run Club Abuja.
