SAFA Apologises To South Africans For Oversight In 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has tendered a public apology to the nation following the recent sanction handed down by FIFA over the use of an ineligible player, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

World football’s governing body docked Bafana Bafana three points and three goals after it was confirmed that midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who was suspended, featured in their World Cup qualifying fixture.

In a statement released on Monday, SAFA admitted responsibility for the error and apologised for the embarrassment caused.

"We apologise to the nation for this administrative oversight and will reflect on the steps to take at the conclusion of our qualifying campaign," the statement read.

Despite the setback, SAFA reiterated its commitment to supporting the team in their remaining qualifying matches, while stressing that measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such errors in the future.

The deduction has left South Africa in a difficult position in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with crucial fixtures still to come.
