SWAN Election: Benjamin Cleared For Second Term As SWANECO Releases Final List

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Electoral Committee (SWANECO) has released the final list of candidates cleared to contest the association’s national election scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2026, in Kaduna, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The list, released on Wednesday, August 26, contains candidates for the offices of President, Deputy President, Secretary General, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and the six zonal Vice President positions.

Incumbent SWAN President, Isaiah Kemje Benjamin (JP), has been cleared to seek another term and is the sole candidate for the presidency.

The Deputy President race is one of the two contests featuring two candidates, with Nyong Bonny Silas and Chukwuleta Chigozie cleared to contest the position.

For Secretary General, incumbent Ikenna Okonkwo is the only candidate cleared by SWANECO, while Amusan Olufemi Ayorinde is the sole candidate for Treasurer.

Ijeoma Nwante has also been cleared as the only candidate for Financial Secretary.

The electoral committee further confirmed candidates for the association’s six zonal Vice President positions.

The North East Vice Presidency will be contested by Ahmed Kagana Amshi and Samuel Gangwaja, making it the second two-way race on the ballot.

Zaharadeen Saleh is the sole candidate for North West Vice President, while Azuka Chiemeka will contest for the South South position.

Ikemefuna Asika is the candidate for South East Vice President, while Ayodeji Ogunsakin has been cleared for the South West position.

The election is a key component of the 2026 SWAN Triennial National Delegates Congress, which is taking place in Kaduna from August 26 to 29.

Delegates from SWAN chapters across the country are expected to participate in the congress, with the election determining the national leadership that will steer the affairs of the association for the next tenure.

With most of the positions attracting single candidates, attention is expected to centre on the contests for Deputy President and North East Vice President, where delegates will choose between two candidates in each race.

The Kaduna congress is being held under the theme: “Harnessing the Power of Sports and the Media for National Development, Youth Empowerment and Global Competitiveness.”
