Salary Cuts Hit South Africa National Teams

Sampson Adedeji

Tension is brewing within South Africa’s national football setup as the country’s football federation has decided to implement salary reductions for technical crew members across all levels, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to information from Pretoria, the federation has proposed a 25% salary cut for technical staff with the notable exception of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

The development is reportedly one of the main reasons Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis chose to step aside from her role.

A source familiar with the situation confirmed the disparity, saying:

“Hugo was not part of the proposed salary cuts, which go as high as 25% for some staff, even though his salary takes up the majority of SAFA’s wage bill. They won’t touch it, I can guarantee you that. Mentioning Hugo in this equation was just someone trying to put petrol on a fire.”

The situation has raised concerns about morale within South Africa’s football ranks as the federation continues to grapple with financial challenges.
