Nigeria's hopes of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken a significant hit with the suspension of African Football Of The Year, Ademola Lookman ahead of Tuesday’s decisive qualifier against Group C leaders Benin Republic in Uyo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Lookman, one of the Super Eagles’ standout performers during the qualification campaign, is ruled out after picking up his second yellow card of the series during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Lesotho on Friday in Polokwane, South Africa.

The Atalanta winger was booked in the 64th minute following an off-the-ball incident. After being fouled in midfield, Lookman responded with a shoulder charge on his opponent, a move referee Alhadi Allaou Mahamat of Chad interpreted as retaliation, leading to the caution.

It was Lookman’s second yellow card in the qualifiers. His first came during Nigeria’s away clash against South Africa last month, and under FIFA regulations, two yellow cards across different matches result in a one-game suspension.

Major Blow for Nigeria

The 26-year-old’s absence is a considerable blow for head coach José Peseiro, who is already under pressure to guide Nigeria to the World Cup in North America. Lookman has been a driving force in the team’s attack, offering pace, creativity, and a goal threat that has been vital in recent outings.

With Nigeria needing nothing less than victory over Benin to keep their qualification hopes alive, and also requiring a favorable result between South Africa and Rwanda—Lookman’s suspension removes a key weapon from the Super Eagles' arsenal at a critical moment.
