Seven Records Nigeria Have Set Ahead Of AFCON Semi-final Against Morocco

Nigeria will face tournament hosts Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday, with a place in the final at stake at the 70,000-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Both sides arrive unbeaten in the competition, guaranteeing that one of Africa’s in-form teams will suffer its first defeat of the tournament when they meet in the last-four encounter.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the high-stakes clash, they do so on the back of a series of historic milestones achieved during an impressive AFCON campaign.

Seven records Nigeria have set at AFCON 2025

1. Consecutive encounters with host nations

Nigeria are facing the tournament hosts for the second AFCON in a row. At the 2023 edition, the Super Eagles met Côte d’Ivoire in both the group stage and the final — winning 1–0 in the group phase before losing 2–1 in the final.

2. Consistent multi-goal scoring

Nigeria have scored at least two goals in each of their five matches — the first time they have achieved this feat in an AFCON tournament.

3. Highest goals tally at a single AFCON

With 14 goals already scored, the Super Eagles have recorded their highest-ever goals tally in a single edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

4. Five straight AFCON victories

Nigeria have won five consecutive AFCON matches for the first time in their history.

5. Semi-final regulars in the 24-team era

Under the expanded 24-team AFCON format, only Senegal (2019, 2021, 2025) and Nigeria (2019, 2023, 2025) have reached the semi-finals on three occasions.

6. Ninth final within reach

A victory over Morocco would see Nigeria reach a ninth AFCON final — and their second consecutive appearance in the final for the first time since the 1988 and 1990 tournaments.

The Osimhen factor

Victor Osimhen has been central to Nigeria’s success at AFCON 2025. The Napoli forward has scored four goals at the tournament — the most by a Nigerian player since Odion Ighalo netted five in 2019.

Osimhen has recorded 10 goal involvements at the Africa Cup of Nations (five goals and five assists).

He has scored three goals in knockout matches at this edition, becoming only the fifth Nigerian to achieve that feat at a single AFCON.

Nigeria have never lost an AFCON match in which Osimhen has either scored or provided an assist (five wins, two draws).

With history beckoning and momentum firmly on their side, the Super Eagles head into the semi-final determined to extend their record-breaking run against a formidable Moroccan side on home soil.
