The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has honoured former Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi for her remarkable legacy and record-breaking achievements at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ebi, a towering figure in African women’s football, made history by featuring in seven editions of the continental tournament — more than any other player in WAFCON history.

In a glowing tribute published on its official website, CAF praised the 41-year-old central defender for her unparalleled longevity, leadership, and influence on the African game.

“In the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, few players can compete with the longevity and impact of Onome Ebi,” the statement read. “An emblematic central defender of Nigeria, she remains the most capped player of the tournament, with seven appearances to her credit.”

Ebi featured in the 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022 editions of WAFCON, helping Nigeria to four title wins — in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Her consistency, composure, and tactical intelligence earned her wide respect across the continent.

CAF further described Ebi as “a natural leader, respected and listened to,” whose calm demeanor and sharp defensive reading defined more than a decade of dominance with the Super Falcons.

Beyond the African stage, Ebi’s illustrious international career boasts over 100 caps and five FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances — another record for Nigeria.

“It is above all her consistency at the very highest level that commands respect. On the pitch, as in the locker room, she embodied for more than a decade the high standards and pride of wearing the Super Falcons jersey,” CAF concluded.

Ebi retires not just as a champion, but as an enduring symbol of excellence in African women’s football.
