Nigerian striker Terem Moffi and his Ivorian teammate Jérémie Boga were violently attacked by angry supporters of OGC Nice on Sunday evening following the team’s 3-1 defeat to Lorient on Matchday 14 of Ligue 1, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The shocking incident occurred outside the club’s training centre when the team returned from the away fixture.
According to reports, Moffi was punched in the body and groin, spat on, and also subjected to racist insults, prompting both players to begin legal action against those involved.
The attack marks a troubling escalation in tensions between the club and its fans, with frustrations boiling over amid a poor run of results.
Observers say the crisis appears to be far deeper than sporting performance alone.
OGC Nice Issues Official Statement On Monday evening, OGC Nice released a strong statement condemning the incident while expressing support for the attacked players.
“The club understands the frustration generated by the string of poor performances and displays far removed from its values. However, the excesses observed during this gathering are unacceptable. Several club members were targeted,” the statement read.
The Ligue 1 side also confirmed that medical checks were carried out on Moffi on Monday, after which he was placed on sick leave until Sunday.
