Teams in Contention

The six nations vying for qualification are Iraq, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bolivia, New Caledonia, Jamaica, and Suriname.

Format and Fixtures

The playoff format gives an advantage to the two highest-ranked teams—DR Congo and Iraq—who advance directly to the final round of their respective pathways.

The four lower-ranked teams will first compete in semifinals:

New Caledonia vs Jamaica, with the winner facing DR Congo

Bolivia vs Suriname, with the winner advancing to meet Iraq

The winners of those final matches will claim the last two available World Cup spots.

Tournament Venues

Matches will be staged in Guadalajara and Monterrey—both designated host cities for the 2026 World Cup.

Favourites to Qualify

Based on current form and FIFA rankings, DR Congo and Iraq enter the playoffs as favourites.

Iraq, champions of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, are aiming to reach the World Cup for only the second time in their history, having previously qualified for the 1986 edition in Mexico.

DR Congo, ranked among the top 50 teams globally and ninth in Africa, are seeking their first World Cup appearance since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. The Central African side will look to build on strong performances in regional qualifiers against top opposition, including Nigeria and Cameroon.

World Cup Overview

The 2026 tournament will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams competing across three countries over five weeks.

The opening match is scheduled for June 11 at Mexico City Stadium, where Mexico will face South Africa.

The final will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in the United States, which will be renamed New York New Jersey Stadium for the duration of the tournament.

Group Stage Snapshot

Several heavyweight clashes are already on the horizon in the group stage. Defending champions Argentina headline Group J alongside Austria and Algeria, while Group I features France, Senegal, and Norway, with one playoff winner still to be determined.

Elsewhere, Brazil will face Morocco and Scotland in Group C, and England are drawn with Croatia, Panama, and Ghana in Group L.
