Sokoto Sports Commissioner, Super Eagles Abdullahi Pay Tribute As Lawal's Laid To Rest

Late Uganda Vipers Sports Club star Abubakar Lawal has been laid to rest in his hometown in Sokoto State, reports BSNSports.com.ng.

His remains were received by the Honorable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Engr. Mustapha Mohammed Kafar Marke, along with grieving family members and well-wishers.

Speaking at the solemn occasion, Dr. Kafar Marke expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Abubakar Lawal, describing him as an exceptional footballer and a great ambassador for the sport.

 "The news of his passing was shocking and heartbreaking," he said.

"Abubakar Lawal was an internationally celebrated player who made significant contributions to football across various nations. I sincerely appreciate the efforts of the embassy and all those who ensured his remains were returned to his hometown for a dignified burial. I also acknowledge the presence of his close friend who travelled to pay his last respects."

Dr. Kafar Marke reassured the family of continued support, emphasizing that he had stood by them since the news broke and remained with them as the body was received.

He noted that his actions were on behalf of the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA, PhD. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Lawal’s passing.

Authorities have pledged to follow due process in seeking justice for the late footballer and his bereaved family.

Also in attendance was renowned Nigerian footballer Shehu Abdullahi, who accompanied Lawal’s remains back to Nigeria. Expressing his grief, he extended condolences to the family, the people of Sokoto, Nigerians, and football lovers around the world.

 "Abubakar Lawal was not just a colleague, but a dear friend," he said. "He was humble, kind, and full of life. His death is a huge loss to all of us. I pray that his soul finds eternal rest."
