Strong Response Sends Nigeria Teams Into Semifinals, Set Up Kenya Clash

Nigeria has secured a place in the semifinals of the 2026 Commonwealth Games Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 qualifiers in both the men’s and women’s categories, currently taking place in Angola, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In the men’s competition, the Nigerian side showed resilience in their opening match, coming from behind to edge Kenya 7–6. They followed up with a dominant 14–2 victory over Gambia, before suffering a 10–5 defeat to South Africa in their final group-stage game.

Despite the setback, Nigeria progressed to the semifinals and will face Kenya once again for a place in the final.

Head coach Taye Sofolahan praised his team’s determination and character throughout the group stage, highlighting their response to pre-tournament doubts.

He noted that the team had been underestimated due to a period of absence from international competition but commended the players for exceeding expectations, particularly in their comeback victory against Kenya.

Sofolahan also acknowledged the efforts of Oluwaseyi Johnson, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, for facilitating the team’s participation in the qualifiers.

Johnson, who also serves as Chairperson of the IWBF West Africa Zone, urged the players to maintain focus as they pursue qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, expressing confidence in both the athletes and coaching staff.

In the women’s category, Nigeria endured a slow start, falling 4–2 to South Africa in their opening match. However, they responded emphatically with an 8–0 victory over Kenya to book a semifinal clash, where they will again face the East African side.

Both teams now stand on the brink of qualification as they prepare for crucial semifinal encounters.
